John W. Watts came to Calif. from Bowling Green, Missouri, in May 1850, stayed a few months, then returned home via Panama in Jan. 1851. In 1852, he returned west to Oregon with his wife as part of his father's wagon train. His brother, Benjamin M. Watts, had come to Calif. via Fort Hall in 1849 and worked in the gold mines.
